The following bodywork modalities are offered at WWHP:
Prenatal: focuses on the special needs of the mother-to-be as her body goes through the dramatic changes of the childbirth experience. (view pricing information)
Postpartum: focuses on helping to restore the woman's body to its pre-pregnancy condition as well as relive tension and stress the new mother may be facing. (view pricing information)
Swedish: a system of long strokes, kneading and friction techniques on the more superficial layers of the muscles, combined with active and passive movements of the joints.
Shiatsu & Acupressure: Asian-based systems of finger-pressure which treat special points along acupuncture "meridians" (the invisible channels of energy flow in the body).
Deep Tissue: releases the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the grain of muscles, tendons and fascia. It is called deep tissue, because it also focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue.
Sports: massage therapy focusing on muscle systems relevant to a particular sport.
Thai: A technique that involves a unique combination of gentle rocking and stretching using range of motion and acupressure techniques applied through clothing without oils.
What to expect:
If you’ve never had a massage before the following information will help you understand what to expect:
- You will be asked to fill-out a few various forms depending on which modality it is that you have chosen (Swedish, prenatal, etc.). They will give the therapist an idea of your medical history and present physical concerns. They will be sent to you prior to your first session to ensure you have adequate time to fill them out.
- You will also have time to speak with the therapist before the session begins to go over these forms as well as other health concerns and issues. It is important that you are not at any health risk before the therapist will commence the session with you. This is also a time to voice your goals and expectations for the session(s).
- Next, the therapist will leave the room to allow you to undress. You will be given instructions on how to lie on the massage table. If you have any discomforts with the position you are asked to lie in, the therapist will work with you to adjust the table and use other accessories to help you gain maximum comfort for your body.
- During the session the lights will be low, there will be music and the therapist will emphasize the importance of breathing deeply through out the session. Breaths should be full, but not labored. If you feel the need to talk, try taking a breath instead to help clear your head. Communication is encouraged when there are any details you need to tell the therapist during the session. The therapist will always welcome hearing your needs before, during and after the session. YOU KNOW YOUR BODY THE BEST.
- The duration and goal of a session will vary widely depending on what kind of massage you receive. Your whole body may be included in a general Swedish relaxation massage, or one area of your body may be focused on during a deep tissue session designed to address chronic pain. Whatever it is, your therapist will inform you of the specifics of your session. Again, ASK QUESTIONS WHEN NEEDED.
- When the massage is over the therapist will give you time to rise slowly and dress. There will be time for discussion and rebooking at the end of the session. It is important to DRINK WATER as soon as you can after your session. This will enhance the benefits of your massage! (For more details on benefits, see “helpful links”)
